The Monster Runner Award

The Monster Runner Award is designed to celebrate the runners in our community who excel in race finishes, overcome personal challenges, run personal bests, contribute to a better life for those around them, and go far beyond their comfort zone to find something special within.

Steve Barnes

Steve recently completed his sixth marathon, the inaugural Eugene Marathon in a time of 3:55:31, placing 592nd overall.  Steve ran the race, which he praised highly, with stickers on his jersey and tunes in his ears from friends around the world.  A Eugene resident for the past decade, Steve was ecstatic over the opportunity to traverse the course he trains on regularly, while being in the midst of a world class event.  Steve did more than complete a marathon however, he did something significant to help raise awareness for some of the environmental concerns facing our world today.  Specifically, Steve raised a total of $6,000 that will go towards legal aid assistance for environmental lawyers fighting for clean air, clean water and healthy ecosystems.  For more information regarding Steve's cause, log on to: www.elaw.org.   As a director for the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide, Steve has had the opportunity to visit China on a number of occasions.  In 2005, in fact, Steve ran the marathon in Beijing, where he taught law for a year and a half.  One of the fondest memories Steve has of his time in China is how he'd show up at a local track for a workout in the midst of winter to find hundreds of locals running laps in sometimes nothing more than slippers.  Steve grew up in Provo, Utah and began running during his time as a foreign exchange student in Sweden.  He continues to run for himself and for global causes as a way to maintain a healthy balance and has his sights set on either the Portland or Beijing Marathon this fall.  Steve's favorite run?  From Odell Lake to Yoran Lake, a half marathon loop through the Cascades.  Embodying the spirit of Eugene's focus on the environment and healthy lifestyles, Steve's out to make as much of the world as he can, a better place.
