Eugene OR -

Runner's World Magazine has picked the Eugene Marathon as one of the top 10 Greenest Races in North America. The announcement was made in the special "green" November issue.

"We are thrilled to be voted one of the greenest races by Runner's World" said Nicole Teter, Eugene Marathon's Greening Director, "This was a full community effort and we are proud to be on the list."

The Eugene Marathon was the first race in Lane County, Oregon to go "green". Some of the Eugene Marathon's "green" efforts were:

  • 70% of garbage was diverted from the landfill to recycling using "master recyclers" who sorted all garbage at the events
  • Switching to a reusable "green" goodie bag
  • Use of EWEB's Solar Sun Rover at the finish line that powered the finish line stage and vendor area
  • Partnering with EWEB and the Eugene Hilton to use Sustainable Power during the 3 days of the events at the Hilton, including the Health and Fitness Expo
  • Utilize the City of Eugene's "Recycling Toolkit"
  • Have all runners, workers and volunteers informed of the Eugene Marathon mission to be green so that all can participate!

The third annual Eugene Marathon and Expo will take place May 1-3, 2009.  The 2008 event, which was aptly described as "Running in the Footsteps of Legends", attracted close to 6000 runners and walkers from 45 states and 8 countries.  The Eugene Marathon was also voted one of the top 10 new races by Runner's World Magazine in 2007.

Other event sponsors will include Krusteaz, Nike, Wells Fargo, Fred Meyer, Nesquik, Therapeutic Associates, Clif, Healing Spirit, Foot Solutions, Eugene Running Company, Gorilla Capital, Subway, Canterbury Naturals, Register Guard, KVAL, Kool 99.1, Eugene Hilton, and the Convention and Visitors Association of Lane County Oregon.  Proceeds from this event will benefit Committed Partners for Youth, Food for Lane County, Eugene Education Fund, and Pre's Trail.
